Whenever accessing the internet, the location of your IP address is public data that’s commonly being referenced to deliver web results appropriate for your region and locale. This data allowed us to implement an advanced security feature known as IP Validation, which ensures that only authorized users can access their account and the funds held inside. Any attempt to sign into your Edge account from an unrecognized device and location - will trigger an IP Validation lockout.
This keeps your crypto extremely secure, so that even if your username and password were to be compromised or become known by an attacker, they would NOT be granted immediate permission into your account. Any device that you’re logged into Edge with will receive a notification about this login attempt. If it was you, then simply approve the request to clear the IP Validation lock from the new device. If you do not recognize the attempt, please deny permission and change your password immediately to prevent any unauthorized access.
Important!
If you only have one device and mistakenly delete the app, then you will need to wait the 7-day lockout period to regain access to your crypto, unless you have enabled 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) on your account and recorded a 2FA code in your secure notes.
How does Edge implement 2FA?
Two-factor authentication (2FA), also known as two-step verification, is a security protocol by which two separate checkpoints are required to verify or authenticate oneself. Many users may be familiar with using an authenticator app, such as Authy or Google Authenticator, that has a rotating 6-digit code. Edge’s implementation of 2FA works differently and will not require any secondary app.
When you generate a 2FA code from within your Edge account settings, this now enables a 3rd option for accessing your account during an IP Validation lockout:
- Wait 7-days after inputting valid login credentials into an unrecognized device.
- Authenticate yourself from a secondary device that you are currently logged into (no waiting)
- Authenticate yourself using the 2FA code for your account (no waiting)
Important!
IP Validation is enabled by default. The 2FA code for your account does not exist until generated from within your account settings. To do this, log into Edge open the Menu (≡) in the top right, and click on Settings. Next, click “Tap to Unlock Account Settings” near the top and enter your password to unlock this area. You can now select "Set Up 2-Factor Security” and then “Enable 2FA.” Lastly, tap on “Show backup code” and store this data securely, so you can easily find it if ever your need access to your crypto quickly from an unrecognized device, especially when a recognized device is not available.
