We’re thrilled to announce a powerful new integration in the Edge app: 0x, a decentralized exchange (DEX) provider, is now available for seamless token swaps across multiple Ethereum-based networks. With 0x, Edge users can now swap tokens across Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and Polygon network, without needing mainnet coins for gas fees. This exciting feature streamlines the swap process, making Edge’s non-custodial experience as smooth and convenient as using a traditional custodial platform, but with greater security and control over your assets.
What Does 0x bring to Edge?
0x is a decentralized exchange that facilitates token swaps across major Ethereum-based chains. Unlike most DEX platforms, where users need to hold a small amount of the mainnet cryptocurrency (such as ETH for the Ethereum network or POL for Polygon) to pay transaction fees, 0x offers a unique approach: it allows users to pay transaction fees using the token being swapped. This means, for instance, that if you’re swapping USDC for ETH, you don’t need ETH to cover the transaction fee. Instead, a small portion of the USDC you’re swapping will be used to cover the gas fees.
For those who are new to decentralized exchanges, this is a game-changer. DEXs are popular for their security benefits, allowing users to retain custody of their assets, but they traditionally require additional steps and fees that can make the experience less convenient. 0x eliminates one of these key barriers, providing a streamlined, cost-effective way to trade.
How to Use the 0x Integration in Edge
Here’s how you can start using 0x for seamless, gas-efficient token swaps in Edge:
- Open the Edge app and navigate to the “Exchange” feature.
- Select the tokens you’d like to swap from the list of available assets across Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and Polygon networks.
- Select the token or mainnet coin you want to receive
- Enter the amount, and Edge will automatically provide the rate
- Slide to Confirm — 0x will handle the rest, processing the transaction without requiring you to hold any additional tokens for gas.
Please note: some Ethereum tokens such as USDT (ETH) are not yet supported, because they miss a function in their smart contract, called Permit. It is possible that this function will be integrated by their developers in the future.
If you want to search in advance if your ERC20 token is supported by 0x, you can use this tool.
Why This Matters for Edge Users
Edge is built around the principles of privacy, security, and self-custody. Unlike custodial crypto platforms, where users' assets are stored by a third-party provider, Edge is a zero-knowledge app and all the wallets inside user accounts are non-custodial, which means that only the user has access to their private keys and funds. In Edge, you are in control: there’s no middleman, and your funds are never held by a third party.
With the integration of 0x, Edge now offers a user experience that closely resembles custodial platforms in terms of simplicity and ease of use. You can swap tokens directly without worrying about holding network-specific assets to cover gas fees. This feature enables you to manage your assets as smoothly as you might on a custodial platform—without sacrificing the peace of mind that comes from retaining full control over your funds.
The Risks of Custodial Services vs. Edge’s Non-Custodial Advantage
Custodial services, while often convenient, come with inherent risks. When you use a custodial exchange or wallet, you’re effectively placing trust in a third party to hold and secure your assets. Over the years, we’ve seen cases of exchanges being hacked, funds being frozen, or companies going out of business, leaving users unable to access their funds. In a custodial system, your assets are not truly your own—they’re an IOU from the provider, and there’s always the risk of those IOUs becoming inaccessible or insecure.
Edge was designed to solve this problem by giving users full control over their assets. When you use Edge, you’re the sole custodian of your private keys, meaning only you have access to your funds. Edge has no access to your assets, nor do we store any sensitive data on centralized servers that could be compromised. Integrating 0x aligns perfectly with our mission, offering greater functionality while ensuring users maintain ownership and security over their crypto.
